I watched the second episode of the Baby Borrowers last night and found it extremely thought-provoking. The premise of the show is taking teenage couples who think they’re ready to have a baby, placing them in a “playing house” situation, and recording the results on camera.
They start with babies, then move to toddlers–all the way to caring for senior citizens. It was surreal to turn the TV off and know that I was “playing” mom to two babies myself. I half expected a real mother to walk through the door, rate my performance, and taken them back!
The boys, or The Littles as we’ve been referring to them, adjusted to our home so well. My two kids have stepped up to the extra responsibility like pros. We’re going to increase their allowance to reflect the hours of playing they do with the kids, the extra cleanup, the sharing, etc …
There have been moments–like at the Fourth of July BBQ at a home with no fence, a pool, a creek bed, and various toys scattered over the property which kept the boys on the move–when I have questioned my sanity for signing up for this crazy thing called foster care. I found myself picturing how easy and laid backed the day would have seemed with only my two, self-sufficient children to supervise. The teens on the show also doubted their abilities.
Here’s the difference. I’m not doing this to learn a lesson, though I’m sure I will learn a ton along the way. We are doing this to serve our Jesus, to be Him to the fatherless, to bring Him joy.
The joy of the Lord is my strength.
