If you know me very well at all, you know I do strange things every now and then. Late at night on election day, I did one such thing. I offered a puppy to Obama! I know it’s ridiculous, but I had a great time doing it.
Here’s the letter:
First, let me say that I am a strongly pro-life Republican who did not vote for President-elect Obama. Yet I am not immune to the sense of wonder that FINALLY we have an African-American in the highest office of the land. Despite our differing philosophies, I also believe God has put President-elect Obama in a position of power for His purpose.
As a show of bipartisanship, our family would like to offer to supply the puppy President-elect Obama has promised his two girls. Our purebred black Labrador had a litter of six puppies only four days ago. The pups will be ready for new homes in the week before Christmas. I realize that this offer is off the wall, but it’s also a fun and healing way of saying that my allegiance is to America and not to the Republican party. God bless America!
Is that a hoot, or what? It really was a spiritually-active day for me. The 3rd & 4th graders sang in a special assembly to honor veterans. Every time I looked at the cluster of guest veterans, I got teary. Despite a few false starts and technical malfunctions–and the bell ringing–the patriotic songs did me in!
“God shed His grace on thee” — but how much disobedience can he stand?
“I’m proud to be an American” — will I always be? aren’t there things my country has done that don’t fill me with pride? what lies ahead?
Worry crept in, and despair for the unborn. We watched the election results, wanting to see history made either way. Andrea’s been studying the states and their capitals, which was wonderful as she could shout both out when the outline of the state appeared on screen. As the results swung more and more to the left, I helped the kids get ready for bed and read the final chapter of C.S. Lewis’ The Last Battle with them.
The final scenes in the conclusion of the Narnia series have always awakened my spirit, but this time everything meant more. I was left with a peace and assurance that America belongs to God. Thus, riding on my emotional/spiritual high, I drafted my kooky letter to Obama.
I’ve enjoyed most every post I’ve read about the election and thought I’d link to a few:

It’s Over; but It’s not Over (one Day it will be) by Randy Alcorn
As of Now by Dana McCall (it’s just a snippet in the middle of the entry, but a neat look at the international effect)

Oh, and since I offered the puppy, I’ve found he won’t be fulfilling that campaign promise until spring.
Hey there! Thanks for linking me!
Great post, and great offer. Too bad he’s not planning to take you up on it.
Enjoy those puppies all to yourself- or enjoy the Christmas money you’ll get by selling them. 🙂
You crack me up!!!!! What a wonderful letter!
