I doesn’t matter how many stars a reviewer gives me, I get a lump in my throat when I begin to read the review. Ok, it DOES matter to me how many stars. I’d love to never get below a 4-star rating. (Some of you sadistic readers are thinking about giving me 3 stars just for fun, aren’t you?) But the questions running through my mind have to do with what will be disclosed about the story.
My editor at Moody and I worked very carefully to craft the back cover copy in such a way as to create intrigue without spoiling huge plot points. I’m terrified of the review that will give it all away. It’s the writer’s greatest nightmare–even if the reviewer gives the book 5 stars!
I’m reminding myself that the book is its own entity now, wandering the world, visiting the nightstands, comfy chairs, and bathrooms of America. Hopefully many readers are like me. Once I hear enough about a book to know I want to read it, I won’t look at the back cover or read any other reviews. I love the unfolding of the story with me reading in the dark. Figuratively speaking, as it’s very hard to read a book in the dark. Unless it’s on a Kindle.
So I pray that the reviews will be honest … and artfully modest about the plot. Check them out on The Familiar Stranger’s amazon page.

I’m sure it must be absolutely nerve-wracking to read the interviews on Amazon!! But I suppose it’s like anything, we’ll always have mixed blessings. Our stories will resonate with some and not with others.

Reading is a passion, and I love telling everyone about a book I’ve enjoyed. I’m always careful not to give away major story points or (horrors) the ending. Who wants to read a book when someone has revealed the whole story?

I keep telling myself that over and over, Jody. And I tell readers too! “Really, it’s okay if you don’t like it! Sometimes Mom will dislike a book I loved. Tastes differ!” At the same time, that bad review will surely sting for a time …

Susan, I’m with you. I wonder why they restate the plot points, but I did enjoy all the reviews so far and like how each person had a different way of looking at the book.
