Torn ACL

… for the MRI says so. The report is a bit sketchy, but there might actually be two tears. One part says “consistent with at least a partial tear of the ACL” and one says “consistent with a total tear.” The meniscus is totally intact, however, which is great news. I also have a “kissing contusion of the lateral compartment.” Whatever that means. It might be a sign from God that I’m to write romance. :-0

Mom and I had just sat down to write our infrequent, humorous newsletter–SUBSCRIBE TO IT IN THE SIDEBAR–when I got the call. The next hour was spent researching orthopedic surgeons. I’ve been hearing that going to a sports clinic and having a surgeon who is himself/herself athletic means he/she will be more likely to focus on getting me back into Taekwon-do.

Here’s who I picked: Dr. Alec Denes, Jr. He’s married, from New York, and runs marathons. He even blogs. What’s not to like? However, if you have ever had Dr. Denes perform a surgery on you and he botched it, don’t hesitate to inform me!

No, really, Mom and I had prayed for direction during that short time and we felt at peace about going with him. He’s part of the largest group of orthopedic surgeons in Oregon (Orthopedic & Fracture Clinic), the location is not too far from me, and they could schedule my consult for the 27th. Quite possibly my surgery could be done this year.

So … do you want me to post gory photos after the surgery?

Which brings to mind a much bigger prayer request than my knee. Kristy Dykes is a writer who lives in Florida. She had a malignant brain tumor removed on the 15th. She writes love stories and considers her long-time husband her “hero husband.” He has been posting for her this last week and it is so sweet/romantic. But they can use your prayers.

Here’s a story she related before she entered the hospital:

“Reminds me of when my brother-in-law Ron had hernia surgery years ago, and all the little church ladies came to visit him, and he said, with a twinkle in his laughing eyes and a slight raise to the bed sheet, “You wanna’ see where I had my surgery?” and the little old church ladies are turning green and then red and then green again, and he drops the sheet and points out the door. “It was just down the hall. In Operation Room 3.”

She never loses her sense of humor, even when she’s crying. Quite a testimony.

Well, now you’re up my professional alley as a Claim’s Manager. I’m very familiar with the Orthopedic and Fracture Clinic. Although I’ve never worked with the doctor you’ve chosen, I have with a couple others in that clinic, mostly Dr. Sohlberg and Dr. Duwelius. You’re in good hands there. You should make a great recovery. Don’t be surprised if they can’t get you in for several weeks though. My experience is their surgery sechudle is tight.
Best wishes for a great procedure and recovery!
